healthy chocolate milkshake using black beans for added protein

This healthy chocolate bean shake gives you your chocolate fix while being nutritious, filling and delicious. It is so healthy you can eat it for breakfast yet so delicious you have it as a dessert!

Have you ever thought of blending beans in a smoothie?! As someone on a plant based diet adding beans to your smoothie adds lots of protein, fiber and minerals and you can barely taste them! They add a texture to the drink similar to protein powder.

To make this healthy chocolate shake even sweeter you can add more frozen bananas or dates. Cut back on the amount of beans to just 1/2 cup or less if you don’t want to taste the beany texture. You can use any type of plant milk you prefer. I like unsweetened soy because it adds additional protein to the drink. Or just use water.

Healthy chocolate shake ingredients:

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 3/4 cup black beans drained and rinsed
  • 4 pitted dates (I use small ones) or 2 medjool
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • one cup soy milk or oat, almond, coconut
  • handful of ice cubes about 5-6 cubes

Blend up all the ingredients in a high power blender until smooth!

Ingredients

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 3/4 cup black beans drained and rinsed
  • 4 pitted dates (I use small ones) or 2 medjool
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • 1 cup soy milk or oat, almond, coconut
  • handful of ice cubes about 5-6 cubes

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender and blend on high until completely smooth.

Notes

I like to use unsweetened soy milk because it adds 9 grams protein to the drink, but you can use whatever plant milk you like, or use water.
I bought a huge bag of deglet noor dates from Costco so I used 4 small ones in this recipe. If you are using medjool dates then use 2. You can add more if you want it extra sweet.
